Where artists help artists create, curate and display
for the benefit of the arts.
In 1990, Paul Orvalla and Richard Stephens moved into a commercial warehouse that was built in the late 1800's as a lumber mill. In those days, Redondo Beach was an important port, largely responsible for the growth in building and tourism of our beautiful city by the sea. The lumber mill-turned-warehouse has since housed many things including a fishery -- and now art and artists.
At the time that Richard and Paul were cleaning out the fish freezer and sleeping in hamocks, Paul compared their life style to those of the characters in the Steinbeck novel Cannery Row.
The humble beginnings of Cannery Row Studios are its life and breath. Since Paul's death in 2000, Richard Stephens has cultivated a friendly association of artists and and has begun presenting art shows. He is devoted to keeping Cannery Row Studios the center of the local South Bay art community.
