What a wonderful idea. I missed the coloring contest but do support the carousel.     JH, Hermosa Beach
I really like this issue and my 13 year old boy colored the carousel page. I sent it to my daughter in college and told her to submit. Nice thing to offer.     SL, Redondo
GREAT COLORING CAROUSEL PAGE. MY CHILDREN LOVED COLORING IT AND I MAILED THEM IN. HOPE WE WIN AND REALLY HOPE THE PIER GETS A CAROUSEL. IT WOULD BE SO MUCH FUN.     THANKS, XK, HERMOSA BEACH, BUT WE ARE FUN FACTORY REGULARS
Yes fore sure what is wrong with having a good time by the Sea? Would be a best family entertainment. Even I would ride it and I'm an old fart. Get with it boys ~~~ it's a great idea.     Thanks, DL
I understand the difficulties in making tough decisions, but as you know, when things get tough "the tough get going". We have sat here for all these years seemingly waiting for a miracle, now I don't know about City Hall but my Crystal Ball has broken and someone stole my Magic Wan. Something has to happen, we all know that we need more revenue sources, more venues to promote. This Harbor is an untapped gold mine (dozens of water related recreation possibilities alone) has not been fully utilized, if someone would just step up to the plate and make things happen we may be in a better place tomorrow.

I think that there should be serious consideration for the plans submitted by the leaseholder of the Fun Factory for his Carousel proposal.     Thanks, DL

I lived here for many years and it would be beautiful to see that boarded up dump removed and replaced with what I know Mr. Shoemaker could do a beautiful job building. Hope to see this done on my next visit.     RC, Naimi, Fl
I have known Steve Shoemaker for many years and I can assure you, he is absolutely no threat to children. Both of my sons worked for him when they were young and, far from being abused in any way, they were both inspired and educated by his example. Both are now successful entrepreneurs, in part because of their early association with Steve Shoemaker. I know him to be a generous, kind-hearted man. He also knows how to run successful businesses and I am sure the Carousel will be a success in every way if he is allowed to build it. It seems a shame to let petty politics and historical differences stand in the way of a great attraction and a step forward for the future of Redondo Beach. I sincerely hope cooler heads will ultimately prevail.     FB, Conifer, CO
Right On ~~~ Think Positive ~~~ Think Carousel! What is the city council thinking?     LS, Redondo Beach
I AGREE, "do what your residents want … PUT A CAROUSEL AT THE PIER."     SC, Redondo Beach
Dear Easy Reader: In last weeks article, are the RB LAYOFFS really a sign of the times or is it bad management? Building is down; income is off while the city sits on unused property that could be, and would be developed. I am referring to the Octagonal Building at the pier that has been vacant for almost two decades. Vacant while proposals have not been considered or have been denied. If the “city is hemorrhaging in red ink at this time“ it is partly due to the million dollars in revenue that have been lost through non-development. If Councilman Brand and Mayor Gin really want to save jobs they should increase new city revenue? To Brand’s defense he has only been here a week, but what happened with Chris Cagle? And Councilman Kilroy, the city has had their “ …heads in the sand …” for decades. Come on City Council Members! Discard your petty fears of pleasing CNN and the news media and start trying to make money instead of friends. I know you don’t like me but I am a successful businessman, community leader, capable of performing and will be in business at the pier for a long time. Please … do what your residents want … PUT A CAROUSEL AT THE PIER.     SPS, Redondo Beach
Dear ER: (Easy Reader) On our Easter Bike Ride along the ocean, I couldn’t help notice the defunct roundhouse building at Redondo Pier. Steve Shoemaker has been advertising weekly with full pages in Easy Reader with jabs intended at Redondo Beach powers that be, because I guess they say he can’t build a merry-go-round. Why not? He has the money and gumption.

If it’s the child porn charges holding council back, why not let someone else build it? Or is it reserved for leaseholder David Nagel (Dacron) and other development? We were at the Fun Factory weeks ago, and. Shoemaker himself was doling out quarters in his historic arcade. I think he’s benign and rather benevolent so why not go ahead and build a carousel where the roundhouse eyesore is? It would be a great attraction.     KK, Redondo Beach

A businessman goes to the City of Redondo Beach and says, “I will build – at my cost – a carousel on the Redondo Pier.”

The politicians’ response? No!

The politicians did not review the plans nor the design, nor attempt to negotiate a reasonable rental, nor issue the permits and get it built to generate new City revenue. So what is their response? We do not like the businessman, will not consider a substitute operator, and that’s the end of it.

The politicians' response is irresponsible and silly. Building a carousel would employ construction workers and later operators and generate revenue for the City. A carousel would bring families and kids to the Pier. What do the politicians have against kids?

I have heard that the Counsel is considering adding additional beer/diner operations in the location proposed for the carousel. Does the City favor beer drinkers over kids?

The politicians’ conduct is dysfunctional and foolish. Families and kids deserve better. Give them a jewel of a carousel where memories are made.     LB

I live in Seascape II and my grand daughter really wants a carousel. I think I will take her to the City Council meetings and let the members listen to her pleadings. It might help!     AN, Seascape II
Hey, I like your ads. They remind me of the Burma Shave ads in the mid-west. They keep me thinking about what is to come. Right on Fun Factory. Hope you get your carousel.     PQ, REDONDO
RIGHT ON BROTHER, AS!     HD, REDONDO
I've tried to follow the saga of the Carousel and just can't understand the resistance Redondo Beach has to the concept. It seems to me that a restaurant/disco, a fish market, a fast food hamburger stand, might make more money as a stand-alone enterprise. The question becomes, "what would these do for the surrounding businesses on the Pier and Boardwalk?"

The answer is "very little". In fact adding businesses that are already there would most likely siphon money from the businesses that are there already. A carousel would detract from no one, except maybe the Fun Factory, but I think the extra drawing power of a Carousel would help the Fun Factory. Add to this the attraction to children and families and there seems to be few, if any, drawbacks.

Is it that the city just doesn't like Shoemaker? If so, what has liking someone have to do with business? Business is about making money, enhancing an area, adding something to the business community. Business is not about making friends.         AS, International Boardwalk Business

Spring Break would indeed be better with a Carousel. The pier would also be more fun!     SP,   El Camino Student
I TRIED CONTACTING THE CITY ABOUT THE CAROUSEL AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED IN TALKING ABOUT ANY CAROUSEL. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM. I AM A RESIDENT AND FEEL THAT I HAVE A RIGHT TO STATE MY OPINION. WHO SHOULD I CONTACT?     JB, REDONDO BEACH ..... You should contact your City Councilman.   (Redondo Online)
Certainly wish this were a reality instead of an ad in the Easy Reader. Getting rid of that eye-sore and putting a lovely carousel on the pier is a wonderful idea.     BW, Hermosa Beach
WHAT A GREAT IDEA! START NOW!     JG,   REDONDO
Ref: Letter to the editor for Carousel at Redondo Beach This is such a great idea. I have 3 children 5 yr, 10 yr and a 13 yr. All my kids got ecited, when I showed the picture. My husband and I are both in favor of removing the Octagonal Nightmare. As a family who lives in Redondo Beach, we visit at least 4 to 7 times a month. Thank you for working at this project.     RJ & MJ and Family
I can't honestly say that I favor a carousel in the dismal building, however it seems to be the best choice at the time. I absolutely do favor doing something with the area. There have been proposals for restaurant, bar, disco, fish market and even a park. None of these seem as exciting an attraction as a carousel. Why doesn't the city give it a go? Or, find something else before the structure crumbles.     SP, Hermosa
I just don't understand the objection to a carousel. I grew up in New York and now live in Redondo and would love a Merry Go Round at the pier. It would make the place more attractive for families.     JC
SAW RECENT PAGES IN ER AND CAN NOT UNDERSTAND REDONDO BEACH OPPOSITION TO A CAROUSEL. MY PARENTS LOVE THE ONE AT SANTA MONICA AND I HAD MY BIRTHDAY PERTY THERE OVER THE WEEKEND. I COULD HAVE HAD MY BIRTHDAY IN REDONDO IF THERE WERE A CAROUSEL.     QG, REDONDO BEACH 10 YEARS OLD YESTERDAY 3-15
I can't believe that someone would say ~ "CAROUSEL'S ARE FOR KIDS AND WHO LIKES THEM". We all like children and I think this is a SICK joke. The real issue is ~ does REDONDO BEACH WANT A CAROUSEL. It seems that the residents do and the city fathers dont. I thought the council was elected to represent the people of the community. What a disgrace.     AY, Redondo Beach for 51 years
POP YOU ARE A JERK.     VQ, Hermosa
Hey POP! If you don't like KIDS get out of town. Redondo is a family community and I love the idea of a carousel. I'm sure you are kidding but it isn't nice.     JBR. Redondo Beach, California
Why all these ads fror a carousel? Sounds like a nifty idea. My family loves carousel's and go to SantaMonica to ride theirs. We would be steady customers in Redondo. I can't understand why someone doesn't pick up on the idea. Maybe the economy is too bad. If so the building will probably sit vacant for another 15 or more years.     JBR - Redondo Beach
I THINK THE IDEA SUCKS. I LIKE THE ROUND BUILDING THE WAY IT IS. CAROUSEL'S ARE FOR KIDS AND WHO LIKES THEM. LEAVE THE RATS AND TERMITES ALONE. THEY DESERVE TO LIVE ALSO.     POP
I'm from the Midwest but I visit Redondo Beach because my parents live there. I can't believe that the city doesn't want a carousel. In my part of the country we have them in most every town. The towns that don't have a carousel would die for one. What's wrong with the City Fathers?     KB, Des Moines, Iowa
YES! YES! YES! I LOVE THE IDEA AND SO DO MY KIDS. WE WOULD VISIT THE PIER MUCH MORE OFTEN WITH A CAROUSEL THERE. GREAT IDEA!     JB, Redondo Beach resident 32 years
I simply cannot understand the cities reasoning of preventing the residents the pleasure of a carousel because they don't like the operator. Seems very short sighted.     GH
Dear ER: I’m intrigued by the Redondo Carousel advertisement (ER Feb. 26, 2009). It smacks of the typical carpetbag of businessman's lies on the one side, but also of political shenanigans on the other -- kind of an offsetting potpourri of fouls demanding multiple referee investigations in a neutral corner. I love the idea of such a showcase in the area, but several matters raise a general curiosity: 1. why would it cost unspecified "millions?" 2. How would it bring in unspecified "millions?" 3. Why is the city pressuring carousel proponent Steve Shoemaker, apparently suddenly, for unspecified "higher percentage rent" on completely unrelated businesses? 4. Why is the city demanding Manichean anti-employee concessions from him? 5. Why is the council so adversarial to the project? Is either side just carrying on standard chivying mercantile BS or does Shoemaker have a just case?

The presence of such a beautiful adjunct would be a triumph for the city, whether it drew a profit or not. It's obvious that the vague and diversionary rhetoric in Shoemaker's plaint is hiding a number of elements, and the entire melee sounds like the expected moronic conservative (redundancy) spate of peripatetic blather to either side -- perhaps, even, everyone's a solipsistic schnook -- but I'm tantalized nonetheless. Should Shoemaker not be the St. Sebastianic wounded innocent he casts himself as, his idea is worthy -- if, that is, the central component (money) isn't deleterious, and that doesn't seem to be the city's objection.

Why do I sense a Brahminic taint behind all this, a covert desire on someone's part to marry the gentrification of Fisherman's Wharf to the problem and fall in line with another glitzy booze hall or a $1,000 a plate steak house instead of a more public commodity? Why does the entire farrago reek of a stench wafting ominously up from manholes and detritus sluices? Is anyone at Easy Reader willing to clear this mess up?

Oh, and while I'm on the subject of city councils, let me congratulate ours over here in Manhattan Beach for their marvelous renovation of Pollywog Park. The installation is beneficial and attractive. And it's nice to have a work-out arena once more (though I sure wish they'd included the old graduated push-up bars and slantboards again). I usually hector the officious folk on the oceanward hill, but they outdid themselves on this one, gaining Brownie points and temporary grace against my jeremiads.

I suggest they bask in it while the basking's good. Come the next round of bonehead moves, we'll be back in the ring.     MST, Manhattan Beach

Hi Steve, I saw your recent huge ad in the Easy Reader regarding the possibility of a carousel on the Redondo Beach pier. Wow, how did I miss this? I have been a Redondo Beach resident for 23 years, have four kids and have been involved in various school and community events and would love to help you with this fantastic vision. What a fabulous solution to the vacant property and the revenue that it would produce -a total no brainer! Let me know if this is still a possibility and if I can help out.     MHC
Ok! Why doesn't the pier have a carousel? There was one in the past and Santa Monica has done well with theirs. Great Idea!     TP
A Carousel would be a wonderful addition to the pier.     HC
JUST SAW THE EASY READER ARTICLE ABOUT THE CAROUSEL AND THINK IT IS A GREAT IDEA. MY KIDS WOULD LOVE IT AND MY WIFE AND I WOULD TOO! WE WOULD ALL COME TO THE PIER MORE OFTEN.     AF
i read your ideas and think children like me would love the carousel in the pier. i go to the fun factory with my parents and have lots of fun. please add a carousel.     JK
WOW / GREAT!     JV
i read the easy reader article and ad for the carousel. what a great idea and long overdue.     PP
This is a wonderful idea and my children and I would visit the pier more often if it were done. I don't know why the city wouldn't want to get rid of the ugly building and replace it with something for families? JP from Redondo
That is what the pier area needs, and what a great idea,Redondo resadent.     AG

I love carousels. The art, music and motion all take me to “that happy place”. If the project can be worked out I would come visit again and again.     TW
I hope your project is coming along fine. I did look at it awhile back and have a little issue with the one link to the Brookfield Zoo. Carousel Works is just one of MANY new manufacturers of new wooden carousels. My company being just one of them. I'd like to send you some building brochures. There are two very professional companies with stock ready to go buildings designed for carousels that are half the cost of a Weber building. If you could send me your address I'll get them out to you.

If the City ever does move forward with the idea but doesn't have full funding I may be interested in placing a carousel there on a revenue share if they supplied the building. I personally own a carousel just same size and style as Disneyland. As you know my company also built the carousel at Disneyland. Plus I just bought a sister carousel to the one at Santa Monica Pier. I restored the Santa Monica Pier carousel in the 80's. I also have several smaller carousels now in my personal inventory. I also still have a 4 row Looff carousel just like the one the Pier originally had for sale along with several other large antique carousels. Including the carousel from the Los Angeles Fair grounds. The Illions Supreme, that carousel is considered by all carousel experts to be the finest carousel ever carved. Plus it has local Southern California history behind it.

WOW! Yes, a carousel would be a wonderful addition and so very fitting for the city of Redondo Beach's Pier. After reading the EZ Reader article, I felt that it was important for a long-time resident to encourage such a project. I vote YES! for the Carousel at the Pier.     DR
Dear Mayor Gin and Councilmen, I read the letter to the editor in the Easy Reader on November 6, 2008, by Steve Shoemaker and I wanted to express my support for a Carousel. I also wanted to thank you and the City Council for your support and interest in a Carousel. A Carousel will be a great fit for the location, and match well with the Harbor's new theme/design, plus it will be fun. I appreciate your leadership and it's great to see the improvements being made in the harbor by the city under your stewardship. Please keep up the good work. Directing staff to meet with Steve and his team about the Carousel was another step in the right direction. Please keep pushing this project forward. My kids will really enjoy a carousel. Thanks.     TE
Ladies and Gentlemen --- I just came across information regarding a proposed Carousel on the Pier. I would like to express my excitement at the thought of having a carousel in the South Bay. I can't think of a nicer setting than the Redondo Beach Pier for a carousel. As a child, I remember riding the carousel at the "Old Town Mall" in Torrance and what a treat it was to visit. Now with Children of my own, the nearest Carousels are either in Santa Monica, Anaheim or Griffith Park, turning the afternoon treat into a day long event. I hope that after review of the proposal, you will agree that a Carousel on the pier would be a wonderful addition to our community.     Sincerely,     CW, Redondo Beach
Mayor and City Council:     Here is a link to the survey results about the carousle planned for Parcel 10.

I have the original sheets if the Mayor and City Council would like them.     SS
We heard about this after a recent visit from Louisville, Ky. Why don't you want to do this? We have a 4yr. old who will ride the carousel at the Louisville Zoo as often as I am willing to pay. The sounds, the lights and motion are all complete pluses for families. Think about reconsidering!     KB
Greetings     It is wonderful to read of the plan to return a carousel to Redondo Beach as I rode the original Looff merry-go-round as a child. I have a framed photo showing me as a 6 or 7 year old riding the large white trojan maned jumper with a garland of roses around the chest. Below it is a photo of my sister 12 years earlier, wearing the same coat, riding a black with lots of scroll straps and jewels. When the ride was sold after it's time in San Diego, I purchased one of the ouside row armoured horses for my museum collection which is currently stored in Irwindale at Running Horse Studio.

There are a few 50' - 60' antique carousels currently on the market with rather hefty pricetags on them as well as a couple of really wonderful frames that would need to be repopulated with animals. Have you considered taking an antique frame and contracting local carvers to populate it with new wooden animals; not just horses, but local wild life, for instance, or sea creatures, zoo animals and even endangered species animals, birds and insects? You could design the figures yourselves and have them carved or ask the carvers to submit their own designs for approval. This is a great way to put an antique mechanism back into service with animals that do not have the usual problems that antique figures have just because of their age and previous service.

I will be looking forward to seeing which direction the city of Redondo Beach takes to bring this important bit of history back to the area. The original ride was such a fantasy visit for everyone and I am sure your new carousel will bring the same joy.     LB     Running Horse Studio

Mayor and City Council,     As a lifetime resident I encourage you to do whatever it takes to see that a carosel happens it's fun and family geared young and old all ride just for the fun of it. The site is ideal for the placement of that type of amusment just like in the good old days when I was a child who loved the pier and penny arcade, times have changed but we all like being a kid and ridding the good old merry go round.    SB,    Redondo Beach
Honorable Mayor and City Council of Redondo Beach, Everybody enjoys a carousel - children, teenagers, parents, and grandparents. The carousel at the Santa Monica Pier has been a huge asset to the community. It would be a great attraction for Redondo Beach. I wholeheartedly support it.     Mrs. SB     La Quinta, CA (formerly Santa Monica, CA)
I live in Seascape III and am tired of that boarded up building in the middle of my view. A carousel would be a great addition and pleasing to many visitors. WONDERFUL IDEA!     ED
CAROUSEL on the Redondo Beach Pier could become a great joy not only for the local people but also for the world wide traveler and visitors. And the fame would be go round all over the world. We all need peace and joy on our pier! A local girl,     KS
When I visit my adult children in California, I love to take my family down to your pier but quite honestly it feels a bit foreboding by the area that is being considered for a Carousel as it is presently boarded up. I believe it really hurts the overall ambience of your pier. The idea of a Carousel seems to be more than perfect. When I go to a pier I want to get a feeling of fun and happiness and walk away with wonderful memories and not of a boarded up location that gives the appearance of economic downturn. I cannot think of a better thing to put in there than a carousel. I have always loved to ride with my children and also as a with my wife when on a romantic stroll together. It is a fun carnival type of ride with a real family feeling—more than any other ride I can think of. Thank you for your time.     FB     Las Vegas, NV
Honorable Mayor and City Council: I live in West Covina and love to come to Redondo Beach Pier. I think a carousel would attract families to come to Redondo Beach Pier and would help businesses on the pier as well. There is a carousel in West Covina Shopping Mall, which is located across from Sears Store. Every time I walked by this carousel, I saw big smiles on every rider face. Thank you.     FC
This would be a great addition. Steve is attempting to do good and I as well as many of my friend support this.     RC
Well I believe it’s time to get off your butts, and do this great idea. Thank you very much and have a nice day!!    TP
Sirs, Apparently Steve Shoemaker is making a proposal to turn the pier round house into a carousel attraction. I can see no reason, if tastefully done, as illustrated in this web site, why this wouldn't be a viable solution to turning that eyesore into something productive for the city. Thanks,    TP
Dear City Council: The idea of adding a Merry-Go-Round to the Redondo Beach Pier has great merit. Most new carousels are being built for shopping malls, zoos and city parks. Here, at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk our 1911 Looff Carousel is the oldest ride in the park. People come from all over to see this wonderful part of history and art work.

I can assure you that the families and children that go to the Redondo Beach Pier would enjoy a carousel ride.    Best Regards, CC // Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

I thought you would be interested in the New Carousel in the Brookfield Zoo. The Carousel at the pier would be similar!

In October 1993, I was in the gainful employ of the Harbor Department in Redondo Beach. When the Mayor and City Council voted to invoke the takings clause and condemn the then-Kim Leasehold on Parcel 10 (the Roundhouse), our first task was to rip out all the old reefer units there. I was able to examine the structure up close and in detail. Having spent my previous professional career in petrochemical engineering and construction worldwide, I immediately recognized that the building’s integrity was being severely compromised by a destructive insect infestation. Eminent domain notwithstanding, this structure would have probably (and eventually) been condemned anyway. Regardless, my crew finished gutting the interior and then closed up the Roundhouse for good. From that moment on, it was never re-occupied. Three years later, I was managing a waterfront bar and grill on the International Boardwalk. Not unlike the gentleman above who has been compelled to see the abandoned car wash on Torrance Boulevard on a daily basis, I had to view a completely unproductive and derelict building from behind my bar. Now and here is the most exasperating part of this whole wretched business.

When the original “Endless Pier” was constructed and dedicated back in 1915, the very first lessee there was an Austrian-born finish carpenter by the name of Charles Loof. On this exact same spot now comprising Parcel 10, Mr. Loof constructed a large roundhouse then known as the “Hippodrome”. Utilizing his extensive skills as an aesthetic finish holzschnitzer, or woodcarver, he hand-fabricated a series of beautiful carousel horses over a period of about a year or so. Upon completion, he constructed a carousel there within the Hippodrome, which remained, off and on, until his son, Arthur Loof, terminated his leasehold with the city in 1951 over a storm-damage dispute. To the best of my knowledge and belief, there has been no carousel since. Yes, after some fifty-seven-odd years, it is high time for our XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mayor and City Council to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX start thinking of the collective goodwill and positive public relations that the presence of a tasteful and artistically pleasing merry-go-around will bring to the people’s table.

It is time, now, to build our carousel on the Pier.     WG

I couldn't think of a better use for this long ignored building and area. This building once housed three profitable businesses until they each were abruptly shut down / evicted by the City of Redondo Beach. And now it has sat unused, deteriorating for over 16 years. What a shame! And this is nothing to speak of the costs associated with kicking the businesses out. And the lost rents for 16 years. All in all, a complete and utter waste of taxpayer dollars.

Now comes a proposal and a good one at that! Let's put aside our petty differences for the betterment of the City and our society. Let's give something to the children. Who knows, perhaps even adults can enjoy the simple pleasure of a carousel? While courting a lady in 2007 I rode the carousel in Long Beach; the experience took me back thirty-five years and I cannot share with you what an enjoyable moment we both had. Please consider this humble opinion; build a carousel.     CB

I live in Seascape II and look out at the round building all the time. It is in terrible shape and a carousel would be a very nice addition.     LT
I have spent the last 50 years in the carnival business, playing the Los Angeles County Fair for Thirty of those fifty. I come to the Redondo Pier for dinner when in town and I could never understood why there was no carousel. I think the concept is great and strongly support the addition of a carousel.     TL
I've read through the views and also received the request for comments. I find it interesting that ALL of the comments are POSITIVE. The Mayor and City concil should consider this!     BLK
Walt Disney knew the value of a carousel - that's how Disneyland got started.     VB
Born and raised in Redondo and proud of it!! Me and my family would like to see a Carousel – makes sense !! and would be nice. Much better than now!! That’s for sure!!    SGT KMB - US Army
I can't think of a nicer improvement to the pier and boardwalk than a beautiful carousel. The one on the Santa Monica Pier gives that pier a family-friendly grace note that elevates the impression of everything else. From what I've heard there is no compelling downside. Redondo Beach will benefit, all of L.A. will too. I think you should go for it.    RS
I feel a CAROUSEL would be a great addition to the pier. Thanks,    RR
I have thought for a long time that we needed something like a carousel on the pier. Look how the ferris wheel attracts people to Santa Monica.    JG - Redondo Beach home owner.
Gentlemen: I assume that you have seen the email encouraging people to comment on, and support, the addition of a carousel on the pier. I also assume that you have received input on the issue, probably both pro and con. As a general rule, I tend not to respond to such emails, or to comment on "public issues", but it seemed to me that this particular issue was worth discussing briefly.

As a natural skeptic, I tend to disbelieve most of what I receive in the form of unsolicited email, especially when it asks for me to support a cause about which I know very little. Thus, the main purpose of this email is to explore whether the "fact" expressed in the email (that this location has been boarded up for almost twenty years), is actually true, and whether it is actually feasible to build the building out as depicted in the rendering. If this is the usual misleading propaganda that seems to flourish whenever the public gets involved in "helping" the government govern, then I would like to know that. If, on the other hand, these facts are more or less accurate, what are we doing?

As a person who has the unfortunate "privilege" to look out my window everyday at the long closed Redondo Car Wash (corner of Torrance and Irena), I can truly appreciate the effect of a boarded up building on neighboring businesses. Rarely does a week go by where one person or another does not make a comment about my neighborhood eyesore. While I understand that the City probably does not have the power to remove every eyesore in town, it certainly has the power (and, some might say, the obligation) to deal with such issues when they are on City property. I think most people would agree that the Redondo Pier, for various reasons (natural disaster, tenant issues, mismanagement or whatever else) has, for many years, failed to realize its full potential. Why, if there is a building that could be converted into a revenue generating business, would we not jump at the chance? And why, if the business, in addition to generating revenues, could also be a destination point that would bring people to the pier, would we not jump even faster?

Something does not seem to be adding up. Either the facts presented in the email are the typical misleading stuff that goes around, or we, as a City, need to take a good hard look at ourselves. It is my expectation that a business operator wanting to take over the location would have to make the bulk of the investment to fix up the building, and the City would receive revenue once the business opens. There should be little or no out of pocket cost to the City. Where is the downside? I could understand if someone wanted to open a nightclub, or some other business that might attract an unsavory element (not to suggest that nightclubs do, but there are other business that might-tattoo parlor, maybe?) that it might not be a good thing to add to the pier. But a carousel? One of those things that little kids ride around on and then go buy some ice cream or popcorn (maybe from Charlie's Place) or a Hot Dog on a Stick and lemonade from Craig?

Isn't that exactly how a business center like a pier (or a mall, or promenade or even a flea market) is supposed to work? Each of the businesses depends on the other businesses to attract people to the location for everyone's benefit? And doesn't the City take a piece of every dollar?

On the one hand, I hope this information is wrong, so I don't need to wonder what's going on. My sincerest hope is that this is not just another situation where economic and community building opportunities for the City are being strangled by politics. On the other hand, if this is the case, what a great opportunity! I'm sure that you don't have time to respond to every piece of correspondence you receive on an issue like this, but, if anyone does have time, I would love to know the truth. Thanks for your attention.    SG

A carousel there on the pier would be a wonderful thing to have. I know my grandkids would love it and me too. Being out in the fresh air having fun is good for all of us. Thanks so much,    JR
My husband and I feel a Carousel would be a big boost to Redondo Pier. What everyone needs is more things to do for fun that are not expensive. This would be a WIN-WIN for all.    KCA 7 RWAJR
Just what the Doctor ordered to re-vitalize the family appeal of the pier!    FB
Mayor, Council and all who are a part of this project, I would like to submit my support of this project. This is such an exciting addition to the attractions that are also presently a part of the Redondo Beach Pier. Also a Carousel would enrich the positive destination point desirable to visitor attendance and commercial revenues. those of you who know who I am will remember I was directly involved in the Pier Restoration project.

I have always been involved with and passionate about the continued positive development of our pier. A Carousel was always a desirable component of the project. A Carousel was on the Pier in the past in almost the same footprint.    JG
